My Experience with Success
December 2018, I was invited to a community felicitation program,
Encouraging young children, help them draw their "career" diagram.
On stage when the host revealed my identity,
My name, profession and my interest described by individuality.
Felt nostalgic to be on stage, felicitate young achievers,
When once, I was on other side of the table sitting amongst teenagers.
It was time for interaction and someone asked me to define "success"
I was expecting this one and the answer was roaming in my consciousness.
But how can you articulate a term which is so subjective ?
For some it is “money”, “fame” and for some "satisfaction" is the objective.
It was that moment when a thousand thoughts blurred my mind,
What should I say, how do I convince, what is "success" for today's mankind ?
I started, “A decade back when I first travelled in airplane,
The sight outside my window made me go insane,
I could not see anyone, anything and it was not so mundane.
When the flight was about to land, I could see some people walking down the lane,
Once, my feet were on the planet again, all my doubts went down the drain.”
“Years passed by with similar experiences,
Understanding my true worth, unlearning with different instances.
Ours is one of zillionth planet in the milky way,
The limitless universe knows no bounds anyway.”
“When my existence is not even visible from roof top of a high-rise building,
What about the possessions and people who disappear with ever second passing?
Knowingly, Unknowingly, I am still working to achieve an unreal goal,
I have named it as “Success”, running from pole to pole.”
“Understanding our vulnerability is as important as realizing strength,
Sooner or later, “Time” teaches us a lesson at length
Why not make “Time” our best friend and mentor,
From ages, it has shown path to many, in darkness, it is the best illuminator.”
When I saw audience yawning waiting for the DJ to start playing some song,
Left message unheard, that “nothing is right, nothing is wrong”
The day when you get a smile on someone’s face, will keep you happy all day long,
Let’s live every second to the fullest, this is just a temporary place where you belong.
After months, I get a message from someone in audience,
“Your speech on ‘success’ has given me a perspective and I am grateful for your guidance
“Every second of my life is ‘successful’ sir, I embrace everything that comes by without any reluctance.
I wondered - Isn’t “Being remembered” by a stranger after months also a success ?
Which I truly received in abundance.
